Designing a musical written in 1946 for a diverse 21st
C cast I was inspired by a photo of Amanda Gorman wearing a tartan dress on the
cover of Vogue Magazine. Because
Brigadoon is a magical place the director and I felt we could create our own
rules and introduce ethnic fabrics and motifs to traditional 18th C
silhouettes to honor the backgrounds of our cast members of color. I purchased African fabrics from South
Philadelphia for vests and stomachers, and for our Filipino actress playing
Jean we adapted Piña embroidery to celebrate her ethnic roots. The scenic designer and I created two worlds
as a means of story-telling for the two different women in Tommy Albright’s
life. Fiona McLaren’s world was in warm
and natural colors with Fiona in the color of Heather, making her literally the
Heather On The Hill. Jane Ashton’s world
was and a cool and metallic post-war New York City.
