This digital portfolio shows my costume design work from
Fall 2016 through Spring 2024.&#38;nbsp; In that
time I designed 13 productions:&#38;nbsp; 3
musicals for Penn State University, 1 musical for another university, 7 musicals
in regional theaters, 1 play and 1 opera. 
Of course, there was an 18 month period in this time when all theaters
were close for the pandemic.&#38;nbsp;


As Head of Costume Design in Penn State’s School of Theatre,
my design work provides the opportunity for my costume design students to
observe how I work on large musicals, which is often my bread-and-butter work
in the profession.&#38;nbsp; Most of my
professional design work has centered on dance-oriented musicals and operas, so
I bring my expertise in designing large scale productions to share with my
students.&#38;nbsp; Our production of BRIGADOON
was a brilliant show which took 9 months of planning to shepherd from page to
stage.&#38;nbsp; Combining a rental package with
designs built by our shop, and making it look like a unified production is
often a professional costume designer’s task. The Penn State costume shop built
costumes for all of the principals, and the female dancing ensemble, working
from September to April building petticoats and skirts and bodices as part of
our costume construction classes, and then building the principal’s costumes
after the show was cast in December. 
What a joy to design and build my favorite musical and to share it with
our MFA and BFA costume students.
 

The highlight of my professional work was the production of&#38;nbsp;EVITA I designed for the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach Florida.&#38;nbsp; After seeing the Broadway revival of RAGTIME,
it had been my dream to work with Marcia Milgrom Dodge, and sometimes dreams do
come true!&#38;nbsp; Designing for an all Latinx
cast was thrilling, and although some traditions are baked into the show,
Marcia made it very much her production of EVITA.&#38;nbsp; The beautiful set by Michael Schweikardt&#38;nbsp;featured a centrally placed tiled tango floor and the show opened as if the
ensemble were hearing the news of Evita’s death in an Argentine tango
hall. 


Early on Marcia asked ‘what if
each ensemble member had only one costume?’ 
 This was a brilliant and exciting
concept, and a real challenge to make everything make sense.&#38;nbsp; In the end we decided on a complete change to
all white for the Aristocrats, 
but otherwise worked with adding and removing
costume pieces to basic black dresses and black and white pants and vest
combinations as the scenes required.


My
favorite two words are’ What If.’&#38;nbsp; One
day Marcia asked “What if Eva’s waltz dress was the Argentine flag?” &#38;nbsp; I designed a blue and white dress with the
center sun of the flag, and it was built for us by Barak Stribling in Jersey
City as it turned out that our actress playing Evita lived there!
I most recently designed ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE for the Delaware
Theatre Company which has become a second home for me in the Philadelphia
theatre scene.&#38;nbsp; Generating 10 costume
changes for the actress playing Patsy was a huge challenge for us given the
production’s 2-week rehearsal schedule. 
A professional costumer friend fit and measured our Boston-based actress
on her home turf and then sent a sloper, photographs, and measurements to us at
Penn State.&#38;nbsp; We built 5 costumes for her
in our shop in the off hours, and 3 students received a professional credit as
a result.&#38;nbsp; It has been many years since I
built an entire costume, but even I joined in and built Patsy’s finale dress.


My side gig as a young designer was costume crafts,
especially millinery.&#38;nbsp; I teach a course
on Theatrical Millinery at Penn State.&#38;nbsp; I
am proud to say I am an accomplished theatrical milliner. I often save money on
tight budgets by building the hats and headpieces myself, so there are some
examples of hats I built for GYPSY and LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD and BRIGADOON included
with the production photos in this portfolio.

Designing a musical written in 1946 for a diverse 21st
C cast I was inspired by a photo of Amanda Gorman wearing a tartan dress on the
cover of Vogue Magazine.&#38;nbsp; Because
Brigadoon is a magical place the director and I felt we could create our own
rules and introduce ethnic fabrics and motifs to traditional 18th C
silhouettes to honor the backgrounds of our cast members of color.&#38;nbsp; I purchased African fabrics from South
Philadelphia for vests and stomachers, and for our Filipino actress playing
Jean we adapted Piña embroidery to celebrate her ethnic roots.&#38;nbsp; The scenic designer and I created two worlds
as a means of story-telling for the two different women in Tommy Albright’s
life.&#38;nbsp; Fiona McLaren’s world was in warm
and natural colors with Fiona in the color of Heather, making her literally the
Heather On The Hill.&#38;nbsp; Jane Ashton’s world
was and a cool and metallic post-war New York City.&#38;nbsp;

Little Red Robin Hood was an original musical cross-pollinating the story of Little Red Riding Hood with Robin Hood. The music was inspired by 1940’s swing music, so I pulled research from 1940s Hollywood Films. Anyone who knows me knows of my deep
love of old movies, and I felt like this musical was written expressly for me! Because the heroine and the villain were both female presenting and the Dame and Friar Tuck were played by men, I created a world where the women wore pants, and the men wore dresses. This helped enormously in storytelling. One of the big numbers was called 
Blueberry Buckle, and I came up with the crazy idea of dressing the 2 ensemble women as 3-tiered dessert trays displaying said cake. The costume shop created brilliant methods of both making these costumes and making them easy to put on and take off!

Pure joy. Designing this production was pure joy from start to finish. I was thrilled to be offered this production. I have been crazy about Patsy Cline forever. In Always…Patsy Cline, the script requires 10 separate looks for Patsy. We built 5 of them in the PSU costume shop. 1 faculty member and 3 students each built one of Patsy’s looks. A gifted undergrad received her first professional credit by making Patsy’s black and white shirtwaist dress. Because there were so many costumes I built Patsy’s white finale dress. Many hours of work, but I worked with joy and passion. A wonderful experience.

The director and design team for Sweet Charity approached the musical as if the character Charity Hope Valentine was seeing the world through rose colored glasses. All elements of design switched to pink whenever Charity entered her fantasy world. The original Fosse choreography was recreated by Alison Morooney. The Penn State costume shop built a large portion of this production making the dresses that could
move and dance.

The biggest challenge with this production was finding and purchasing matching plaid jackets and plaid pants for a cast of vastly different sized actors. Finding plaid jackets for purchase with a large enough pattern to read across the footlights was also necessary. The current trend in menswear is to cut very tight and close to the body (look at any newscaster these days!) Luckily, with all my experience in tailoring menswear, I was able to rebuild 3 of 4 jackets, adding in extra inches in chests and biceps as needed. I also built and added black silk satin shawl lapels to turn the jackets in to 1960s inspired formal jackets. Lots of work, but the end result was very handsome.

Director Marcia Milgrom Dodge set the opening and closing of Evita in an Argentine Tango Hall. The idea was to present the costumes in a theatrical way. The ensemble first appeared simply dressed in black dresses and black and white period menswear. We added various pieces to these basic costumes to create the different looks needed by the ensemble. The only full change the ensemble had was into all white looks to play the aristocrats. The Rainbow Tour was the most thrilling 5 minutes of my career- we built 4 Bar jackets and Eva changed colors a vista for each country: Red for Spain, Yellow for France, Violet for Italy, and Black for England.

Begun in 2018 and postponed until 2021, I negotiated cast changes and a 2 nd trimester pregnancy to finally create iconic looks for the members of the Million Dollar Quartet and their friends. Having 2 years to shop vintage and contemporary clothing for this
production was a definite advantage.
